Recently, I came across a post on Facebook by Dan Schneider.  


It was an intro to the Monarchs special needs skating and hockey program, and an invite for more volunteers.  I didn't know anything about the program.  But I was interested.  I had a lot of doubts too.  Even though I've helped coach some youth hockey, I've never helped kids learn to skate, nor did I feel qualified to do so, especially special needs individuals.  


I reached out to Dan who explained it a bit more and suggested I come for a session to check it out.  So that's exactly what I did, and now, every chance I get, I go volunteer!  


I've been so impressed with these kids.  Participants who I first met a very short time ago, are now skating without skate aides, dong hockey stops, turning, and even skating backwards!  Their amibition to learn and their hard work is so obvious, and they have made my volunteering easy and a joy.  Everyone in the program, including the kids, the other volunteers and administrators are exceptional, kind and caring people.  I am lucky and  proud to be a part of this and never imagined my own life taking this turn.  


I am participating in this event to help raise needed funds for this great program.  Please give what you are comfortable giving, or maybe even come to the charity game and see me spin around aimlessly among some NJ Devils players.
